The best contractor advice and payroll solutions
from the experts that have been there and done it all.
We’re often asked for contractor advice from people who are about to make the transition from permanent employment, and also from contractors who have been in the game for a while.
One of the most important considerations that you need to consider when you set up as a contractor (and this even applies to actual working contractors) is to set yourself up legitimately to receive payment.
The best advice we can give is to pick up the phone and speak to us, so we can steer you through the options. If the best solution for you doesn’t lie with us, we will happily point you to that direction.
At the moment a UK contractor currently as three options. The first one is to set up as a limited company. This involves handling all your own paperwork, organising your own tax liabilities, and making sure you are 100% compliant with tax legislation.
This is as well as making sure you have enough work and money coming in. Setting up your own limited company is extremely time consuming, and not as tax efficient as some people make out. It effects the time that you should be spending on actual work and earning money. It also requires great organisation in order to keep up with payments to the tax man.
The second option is to sign up to a PAYE umbrella company. The third is to go with one of the large group of aggressive tax avoidance umbrella companies. You can recognise these by the adverts that are emblazoned with a very tempting “90% take home pay” promise.
So there’s options out there to choose from, so which one would we recommend a contractor goes for?
Our answer is none of the above. They all have aspects that we would not recommend to any contractor – with some aspects being very illegal!
Although setting up as a contractor can be extremely liberating, you are no longer in the comfort of being a permanent employee.
You don’t have as many rights, your tax isn’t being handled by an invisible department and you cannot count on the same regular sum of money arriving in your bank account every month.
That is why it is so important to do things correctly, to work hard and to make sure you’re netting as much money as possible, within the confines of the law.
We offer the best of both worlds and provide a unique payroll service that combines all the benefits of an umbrella and limited company in one while taking care of all your admin and netting you the maximum amount safely.
Our model is based on the John Lewis Partnership model which is one of the most respected brands in the country so we know we are doing it the right way. Our payroll solution is also all provided on shore and also gives you many of benefits reserved for permanent employees so it really is a “Win, Win”.
